The team behind Mitzvah Day was in Parliament yesterday talking to MPs about this year's efforts to persuade people around the UK to volunteer to take part in activities to help others and give something back to the community. Theresa Villiers, MP for Chipping Barnet, took time out of her day to meet them.
Theresa has been supporting Mitzvah Day for many years. After meeting the staff and volunteers who came to Westminster, she said: "Mitzvah Day is a great opportunity to help disadvantaged and vulnerable people. I was interested to hear of the efforts being made to ensure Mitzvah Day is inclusive so that people from all faiths or none can get involved in this great volunteering initiative."
"I was happy to take part in the challenge MPs were set today to help ice some cakes though I don't think my efforts would win me any prizes! I was also very pleased to meet one of my constituents, Zechariah Creeger, who came to the Mitzvah Day event in Parliament representing the Bnei Akiva youth organisation."
The literal meaning of Mitzvah is a commandment in Jewish law, but it is more commonly understood to mean a good deed or an act of kindness. That is the basis for Mitzvah Day which this year takes place on 27th November. Click here for more information about getting involved in a Mitzvah Day project.
