Chipping Barnet MP Theresa Villiers has welcomed nearly 3500 extra police officers for London, following an £18 billion pledge by the Government to increase numbers.

The recruitment of the 3468 bobbies means that the capital now has more uniformed officers than at any time in the history of the Met Police.

And Theresa vowed to fight for Barnet to get its fair share of police on the beat – an issue that comes up on doorsteps all the time - as she continues her campaign to save Barnet police station from being sold-off for redevelopment.

“I am seeking information about how many of these officers will be deployed to Barnet, but I certainly welcome this substantial increase that should reassure residents that the Government understands they want more police on our streets,” Theresa said.

“The police need to become more effective on car crime, burglary and antisocial behaviour – something I have discussed with them during our regular meetings.

“The matter of Barnet police station continues to loom large too.

“This week in Parliament, I said it was good news that the Conservative Government is delivering its promise for 20,000 more officers across the country.

“But I added that officers will need somewhere to work and I asked the Policing Minister to pressure the Mayor of London to scrap his police station closure plan, so we can save Barnet police station.

“Minister Chris Philp replied: ‘I do not think any of us want police stations to close, so I join her in calling on Sadiq Khan to reconsider’.”

Theresa is keen to hear the views of her constituents on what the priorities should be for these new police officers. Please click here to take part in her survey on crime and policing.
