Over recent months, Theresa Villiers MP has appealed to a host of organisations in her efforts to restore the route of the 84 bus between Potters Bar and New Barnet. This ceased operating after it was closed down by the bus company, Metroline, when passenger numbers fell during the pandemic.

In her latest move, Theresa has asked Barnet Council to consider providing funding for the service to make it more economic. She is also asking the council to meet with her, TfL, Hertfordshire County Council and the bus operator to see if a solution can be found.

“This route has been a much-valued part of our public transport system for over a hundred years,” Theresa said.

“It is a vital link for local people, especially those living in Monken Hadley and Hadley Highstone who need it to access the tube and national rail networks, as well as shops and other facilities in Potters Bar.”

“There was huge unhappiness when Metroline announced in February that it was closing this much-valued local service. As a result, the route was partially restored - the St Albans to Potters Bar element was taken on by Sullivan buses, with financial support from Hertfordshire County Council.”

“But the Potters Bar to New Barnet route remains closed. Many constituents are unhappy and find the alternative public transport options to be impractical.”

I have raised with this Hertfordshire County Council, TfL and with the Department for Transport. I am now urging to Barnet Council to help restore the Barnet element of the 84 service”

“I am asking them if they will consider providing funds which could make this service viable. I also want to get everyone round the table to try to find a solution to this issue.”

A Facebook group dedicated to this issue has attracted over 600 members and you can join it here.
