Representing a constituency in the borough which is home to one of the largest Jewish populations in Britain, Theresa Villiers, Member of Parliament for Chipping Barnet, has issued the following Rosh Hashanah message:

"I would like to wish Shana Tovah to all those in Barnet who are celebrating Rosh Hashanah this weekend.

At this special time, I hope people will be able to enjoy the festivities with their family and friends, both at home and at their synagogue.

With Rosh Hashanah marking the start of the new year in the Jewish calendar. I would like to wish all those celebrating a sweet, happy and safe New Year”.

Commencing on the 25th September and lasting for two nights, Jewish people in the UK and across the world will celebrate this important festival. Rosh Hashanah is marked by candle lighting, prayers, and the blowing of a ceremonial ram horn called a Shofar.

Traditional Rosh Hashanah meals will be taking place this weekend, including fruits such as apples and pomegranates dipped in honey which symbolise a sweet and prosperous New Year.
