Remembrance Sunday

The Rt Hon Theresa Villiers, Member of Parliament for Chipping Barnet, took part in the High Barnet annual Remembrance Sunday procession with the Mayor of Barnet, Cllr David Longstaff, and the Representative Deputy Lieutenant for the Borough of Barnet, Martin Russell.

Servicemen and women from the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers and the Royal Logistics Core marched in the parade, along with veterans from across Barnet (including Gurkhas), local cadets, scouts and guides. Large crowds were present to watch the procession and pay their respects to those who have given their lives in service of their country.

The procession walked down Barnet High Street from the Territorial Army Centre in St Albans Road to finish at St John the Baptist Church, where Ms Villiers laid a wreath and attended the church service led by the Revd Chris Ferris.

Theresa Villiers said: “We owe our freedom today to the sacrifices made by the generations before us. As our local war memorials tell us, many left their homes in places such as High Barnet, East Barnet, Friern Barnet, and Totteridge to fight. Tragically, some of them never returned and it is right that every year they are remembered in ceremonies across the borough of Barnet.”

“Dedicated work is still being carried out by our brave servicemen and women across the world, and it is an honour to join so many of my constituents in commemorating and remembering those who fought for their country.”
