Barnet MP, Theresa Villiers, has joined others in condemning the attack on the Indian High Commission.
A protest there on Sunday led to disorder and vandalism against the High Commission by a group wanting to create a separate state of Khalistan, breaking away from India.
A strong supporter of India, Theresa Villiers said “These were completely unacceptable criminal acts and I condemn them completely.”
“It was especially offensive that the Indian flag was attacked. I know this will have distressed and offended many of my British Indian constituents.”
"I have written the High Commissioner to express my support and solidarity. I am also urging the Metropolitan Police to review their security arrangements and ensure that more is done to protect the High Commission and its staff in the future.”
Condemnation of the attack has come from Foreign Office Minister, Lord Ahmad and the UK High Commissioner to India, Alex Ellis. The matter has also been raised in Parliament by Conservative MP, Bob Blackman.
I wanted to express my condemnation of this unacceptable incident and of my full support for your work in the UK.
I welcome the investigation which has been set in motion by the Metropolitan Police. However, I am writing to the Commissioner, Sir Mark Rowley, asking for an assurance that the police will be taking security around the High Commission seriously.
