VILLIERS CONDEMNS FBU DECISION TO STRIKE DURING BONFIRE NIGHT AND DIWALI CELEBRATIONS

“Of course I appreciate and applaud the vital work done by fire fighters to keep us safe in London but I believe the FBU have made a bad misjudgement on this issue. The fireworks which are a traditional part of Diwali and Bonfire Night celebrations can be a source of fun and entertainment for millions across the country but they do lead to an increased risk from fire.”

“Choosing 5th November as a day for strike action is irresponsible and unnecessary. I would urge the FBU to call off this strike which will cause needless additional risk to Londoners.”

“I am also gravely concerned about the reports that those stepping in to provide fire cover during the dispute have received threats and intimidation. Deliberately seeking to disrupt the work of the people providing vital fire fighting services during a strike is totally unacceptable.”
