MP Theresa Villiers has vowed to fight plans by the Mayor and Transport for London to build over the car parks at High Barnet and Cockfosters tube stations.

TfL has announced early stage proposals for intensive housing development at these two stations and others around London, such as Finchley Central. They have launched a consultation to gauge local opinion and will hold public exhibitions on their proposals.

“The Mayor of London’s plans for blocks of flats are entirely wrong for these locations,” said Theresa.

“In suburbs like Barnet, station car parks are heavily used because each station serves a much wider area than in central London. In all the years I have lived in Barnet and used the Northern Line, the station car park has always been heavily used, with very few free spaces at any time.”

“The proposal to remove parking facilities shows that the Mayor of London does not care about the suburbs and does not understand the suburbs. The new blocks he is proposing are also far too dense for the surrounding neighbourhood. There is already pressure on local services and infrastructure, and plans for many more flats would make this far worse.”

“I will fight against these plans for High Barnet and Cockfosters. I urge everyone to get involved in the consultation to tell TfL to drop their damaging proposals.”

Exhibitions on the plans are taking place at High Barnet Station on: Thursday 13 June, 2pm to 9pm, Friday 14 June, 2pm to 8pm and Saturday 15 June, 10am to 4pm.
