On the eve of the launch of the Conservative manifesto, Theresa Villiers, Conservative candidate for Chipping Barnet, attended an event hosted by members of the Greek Cypriot community. The evening of music was held at the Cypriot-owned Cavalier pub, in Russell Lane N20, and the renowned musician, Nikos Savvides, sang many songs about Cyprus and reminisced about life in Famagusta before the 1974 invasion.

Key figures in the Cypriot community who attended were Andreas Papaevripides, President of the World Federation of Overseas Cypriots, distinguished photographer, Doros Partasides, and former Barnet councillors, Andreas and Joanna Tambourides.  The evening was a great success and was enjoyed by all.

Speaking at the event, Theresa said “I want to thank you all for organising this evening with such wonderful music. I am honoured to have your support and I hope that I am re-elected in order to continue to represent your community in Parliament, as part of a majority Conservative government.  I am working hard to try to make that happen. I ask you for your help on behalf of all my Conservative colleagues across north London. Please contact your local Conservative organisations to find out when your next campaign session is."

Commenting on the Conservative manifesto launch, Theresa said “I have been campaigning for justice for Cyprus for over 16 years. I very much welcome today's commitment in the Conservative manifesto to support Cypriots in their efforts to deliver a just, lasting and peaceful settlement. This shows the continuing support for Cyprus by the Conservatives. We have demonstrated this in Government, for example when William Hague was one of the first people to ring President Anastasiades when the Cyprus banking crisis hit, in order to offer support and advice from the best experts we have."

Page 77 of the Conservative manifesto states: ‘We will ... actively support Cypriots to find a peaceful and lasting settlement to reunite their island.’
