Theresa Villiers campaigning against A1000 bus lanes

Barnet MP, Theresa Villiers, has launched a petition against plans by Barnet's Labour Council and the Mayor of London to put bus lanes in the A1000 in High Barnet and Whetstone.

These are proposed for Barnet High Street, between Wood Street and Meadway, and Whetstone High Road, between Ravensdale Avenue and Oakleigh Road North. They are expected to cost at least £1.6 million.

Speaking at the weekend launch of her petition, Theresa said "This is more anti-car dogma from Labour. I just want my constituents to be able to get to the places they want to be without too much hassle. Labour in the council and at City Hall seem intent on frustrating that because they don't like people to drive their cars."

"These new bus lanes are not needed. They will cause huge amounts of unnecessary congestion. They would also mean the removal of on-street parking. This would greatly harm high street businesses because their customers would find it more difficult to get to them. Anti-car measures like these would deal a heavy blow to our local town centres."

"I'm calling on TfL and Barnet Council to cancel these plans and spend the money on pothole repairs instead. I will be working hard to collect signatures on my petition to stop these A1000 bus lanes."
