Theresa Villiers meets Jeremy Hunt to discuss schools funding

MP for Chipping Barnet, Theresa Villiers, has met the Chancellor of the Exchequer and urged him to find additional funding for schools in Barnet.

The discussion took place in Parliament on Wednesday and included a number of backbench MPs.

Speaking afterwards, Theresa Villiers said “The country faces a grave economic crisis following the Covid pandemic and the war in Ukraine. This was a helpful discussion with the Chancellor on how we get inflation down and fix the public finances.”

“I highlighted the pressure on school budgets which is being caused by rising prices. This follows representations made to me by the headteacher of the Ark Pioneer Academy and other headteachers in Barnet.”

“I asked for increased schools funding to be given priority in the forthcoming Autumn Statement.”

“It is a big relief that the energy price cap introduced by the Government is helping schools, businesses, charities, community groups, and families. But it will only last until April. At the meeting we discussed the importance of implementing a targeted scheme in the spring to give continuing support to more vulnerable households and sectors.”

The Barnet MP has a long running track records of campaigning for additional resources for Barnet schools.

She has also raised cost of living issues in Parliament on a number of occasions, including putting questions to Mr Hunt’s predecessor, Kwasi Kwarteng, and to the outgoing PM, Liz Truss. Ms Villiers has spoken out on the media on the importance of helping people through this cost of living crisis, including on BBC Politics London yesterday.
