Chipping Barnet MP Theresa Villiers has welcomed work to stop excessive noise on the Northern Line around Camden Town and Kentish Town.

Concerned constituents have contacted Theresa asking her to look into why the sound from the track is so loud that it makes commuters wince as trains travel along this part of the network.

Transport for London (TfL) have told the MP that there is a speed restriction in place between Camden Town and Kentish Town to mitigate excessive sound levels.

The authority said noise levels had got better over the summer, but to deliver further improvements, they will look to undertake rail grinding in the area in November and December this year.

“I am pleased that TfL is working to address excessive noise on this part of the Northern Line,” said Theresa. “I have experienced it myself and I can see the upset it causes to other passengers.

“The sound emitted by part of the underground network seems far louder than is normal for other tube lines, and I have had constituents contact me asking for action.

"Hopefully, the measures TfL are taking will help and we should get noise levels down further by the end of the year.

“I will certainly be keeping an ear out when travelling, to see whether progress is being made. TfL have promised to keep me updated on the further work they will be doing to tackle this issue.”

TfL have explained that they are replacing track fastenings on the Northern Line for 500 metres between Camden Town  and Euston. This is expected to reduce noise levels. The complex work started in July 2022 and is expected to be completed by the end of 2024, TfL added.
