The Finchley Society was founded in 1971by local residents, when a row of Victorian cottages in Lodge Lane were threatened with demolition. Founded by Jean Scott and with the support of local residents, including Spike Milligan who lived in Holden Road at the time, the cottages survived. Today, The Finchley Society has over four hundred members and continues to work to protect, preserve and improve buildings, transport links, roads and open spaces in Finchley and Friern Barnet.

Speaking at the event, Theresa said, “Community-based organisations, such as The Finchley Society, play a vital role in conserving our heritage and natural environment. They are a shining example of the positive contribution to our quality of life that voluntary groups can make – a great illustration of the Big Society ideas which David Cameron has made such a priority.”

“It is testament to their excellent work and spirit of the local community that The Finchley Society is still going strong after forty years. I am sure they will continue to thrive for the next 40 years as well.”
