Theresa Villiers, MP for Chipping Barnet, has taken action to back local GPs in her constituency after holding a series of discussions with them.
Following on from meetings with GPs from Whetstone and other areas, Theresa appealed to Health Secretary, Matt Hancock, to put general practice at the heart of the NHS Ten year plan for the future. He agreed that this was vital.
Theresa is also lobbying NHS England the Barnet NHS CCG to expand GP services in her constituency to provide much needed support for local NHS doctors and help people get appointments when they need them.
“GPs are the bedrock of our National Health Service; and they are under pressure from a rising population in Barnet and rising demand for healthcare
“Meeting local doctors working in areas where many new homes are being built has confirmed my view that it is vital that we expand GP capacity to meet the increased demands we are placing on the NHS as our population becomes older.
“I’ve been lobbying the Government, NHS England and our local Barnet NHS CCG to expand GP practices in Barnet. I welcome the commitment in the NHS Long Term Plan to give a central role to GPs. This is being backed by an £4.5 billion for primary and community care by 2023/24, thanks to the Conservative pledge to support the NHS with an £20 billion of investment.
“I will continue to work to see those additional resources for primary care supporting our hard-working GPs in Barnet and delivering the best NHS services for patients.”
As well as highlighting the importance of additional GP capacity with the Health Secretary in Parliament, Theresa has also raised this as Prime Minister’s Questions.
