Remebrance Sunday in Chipping Barnet

A two-minute silence was observed at the war memorial at St John the Baptist parish church in Chipping Barnet to mark Remembrance Sunday, with social distancing being observed.

Participants in the ceremony and members of the public attending were all asked to keep two metres apart. The Act of Remembrance was led by the Reverend Canon Dr Tim Bull, from the St Albans diocese, since there is a vacancy for the role of vicar at St John's Church.

Dr Bull conducted a short service in front of the war memorial after the two-minute silence was observed. Wreaths were laid by the representative deputy lieutenant for the London Borough of Barnet, Martin Russell, followed Cllr David Longstaff, representing the Mayor of Barnet. Major Richard Farrar, officer commanding 240 Royal Logistic Corps (which is based in St Albans Road) laid the wreath on behalf of the armed services, then Theresa Villiers MP, and church warden Jacob Kurian.

After the wreath laying, Ms Villiers said "It is very sad that the usual procession from the Logistics Corps base in St Albans Road to the church has had to be cancelled because of lockdown, as well as the church service. But the limitations on our daily lives caused by Covid have not prevented us from pausing to reflect on the sacrifice of the men and women who gave their lives in defending our freedom. We must always remember them."
