Theresa Villiers litter pick

Chipping Barnet MP Theresa Villiers joined the ‘Dollis Brookers’ volunteer litter pickers at the weekend to help clean up Dollis Brook.

Theresa turned up with around 30 others for the event on Sunday in glorious sunshine along the Dollis Valley Greenwalk, just south of the Dollis Valley estate.

The clear-up around the brook took place on the last day of the Great British Spring Clean campaign which is run by Keep Britain Tidy to encourage volunteers to give a hand picking up litter.

“Thank you to the Brookers for allowing me to come along and do my bit to help keep Barnet free of rubbish,” said Theresa.

“Sadly, people still litter this precious green space which makes many of my constituents angry. But, conversely, it is heartening to see how many local people care enough to give their time on a hot sunny day to make the place where they live just a little bit better. We bagged a fair bit of rubbish and made a difference.”

Theresa added she would be contacting the Environment Agency about pollution in the brook, which is a tributary of the River Brent.

When she was Environment Secretary, Theresa introduced the Environment Bill to Parliament. The legislation includes a number of measures to try to tackle avoidable plastic waste and litter, including a deposit return scheme for drinks containers.
