MP Theresa Villiers has been taking part in a series of activities to mark Holocaust Memorial Day 2023.

She was among the speakers at Woodside Park Synagogue on 29th January to address a gathering to dedicate a memorial at the shul to victims of the Shoah. In her speech, she said “No other episode in human history can match the Holocaust for the depth of evil that sought to harness the technology of the modern world to deliver mass murder on an industrial scale."

"The fact that this could have happened not in some distant medieval past, but in supposedly civilised 20th century Europe, is something I find utterly incomprehensible. That so many people stood by when their Jewish friends and neighbours were torn from their homes and subjected to appalling savagery is the most truly shocking part of what happened."

"Holocaust Memorial Day is a time to remember the appalling depths of cruelty to which humanity can sink, and to pledge that we will stand together to make sure nothing like that ever happens again."

A few days later, Theresa spoke in a debate in Parliament about her visit to Woodside Park Synagogue and told MPs the story of her constituent, Mala Tribich, who is a survivor of the Holocaust. You can read Theresa's speech here.

Last week, Theresa signed the Book of Commitment placed in Parliament by the Holocaust Educational Trust, and yesterday she attended the London Borough Barnet Holocaust commemoration ceremony in the Ricketts Quadrangle of Middlesex University to hear Mrs Tribich give her personal testimony.
