Theresa Villiers launching a petition against unwanted bus lanes in Barnet

In letter to Theresa Villiers MP, Barnet Council have revealed that their plans for new bus lanes extend beyond the controversial proposals for the A1000 to include Cat Hill in East Barnet as well.

Condemning this news, Ms Villiers said “There is no need for a bus lane in Cat Hill. In my 18 years as MP, no constituent has ever asked me for for a bus lane there. When I spoke to constituents in East Barnet about this plan, they were strongly against it.”

“This measure would cause major congestion without there being evidence of any significant benefits for bus passengers. It feels like these proposals, like the similar ones for Whetstone High Road and Barnet High Street, are motivated by an anti-car approach from Barnet Council and the Labour Mayor of London. This is ideological, not practical.”

“I will be campaigning strongly to stop this proposed new bus lane in Cat Hill. It is not needed. It is not wanted. It would create hassle and disruption for ordinary people just trying to get around.”

In a letter to Ms Villiers, Barnet Council stated that over a million pounds is expected to be spent on bus lanes in Barnet High Street, Whetstone High Road, Cat Hill, Ballards Lane and Regents Park Road. The proposals are currently going through what the council describe as TfL’s “Modal Audit Process” to provide greater understanding of the impacts associated with the schemes. A public consultation is expected to take place in May or June.
