Barnet MP Theresa Villiers has welcomed the news that the New Barnet Leisure Centre will benefit from an investment of £116,812 to improve the energy efficiency of its swimming pool.

The money comes from the Swimming Pool Support Fund which has invested £80 million into 442 pools across the country since last year. It will fund new photo voltaic panels at the leisure centre to reduce running costs and also switch to cleaner greener energy.

Under its new sports strategy, the Conservative Government is aiming to get 3.5 million more people active by 2030, meeting the Chief Medical Officer’s guidance of 150 minutes per week of exercise for adults and 60 minutes per day for young people. Alongside the Swimming Pool Support Fund, the Government is investing over £300 million in grassroots sports facilities, including football pitches and tennis courts.

Theresa Villiers has campaigned for measures to help children and young people lead healthier more active lives. Welcoming the investment in an important local facility, she said “The hike in energy prices caused by the Ukraine war has caused real difficulties for local swimming pools and I asked the Government to help them.”

“I am really pleased that the New Barnet pool will receive more than £100,000 for new clean energy panels, keeping running costs down and reducing carbon emissions”

“Exercise delivers massive health benefits and it is great news that the financial sustainability and energy efficiency of New Barnet Leisure Centre will be boosted by this investment from the Government. I encourage my constituents to use this excellent facility.”
