Following a meeting with Royal Free Trust chief executive, Peter Landstrom, Theresa Villiers MP has welcomed progress on the NHS plan to expand the emergency department at Barnet Hospital.
The Royal Free NHS Hospital Trust runs Barnet Hospital and Mr Landstrom confirmed that the planning application process had been successfully completed for the project to improve A&E services. Work is underway and patients should start to see the benefits of the expansion by January next year.
Commenting on the news, Theresa said “It is great to know that the planning permission has been secured for the expansion of Barnet Hospital accident and emergency department and that building work is underway. It looks like things are on schedule to finish by the end of this year as planned.”
“When I visited the ED at Barnet, they told me they were already expanding their staff with more doctors and nurses joining the team.”
“I understand the frustration felt by constituents who have experienced long waits in A&E, especially the children’s section. It was good to hear from Peter Landstrom that the conditions in children’s A&E will see some of the most significant enhancements following this upgrade, with more space and better facilities.”
“There will also be improvements to the area where patients arriving in ambulances are passed over to the hospital.”
Theresa Villiers campaigned for expansion of A&E at Barnet Hospital, raising it at Prime Minister’s Questions in Parliament.
